Padukone is set to portray acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal in the film, which is set to release in January 2020.

The first look is of the lead character in the movie by the name ‘Malti’ which will be enacted by Deepika herself.

As she unveiled her look in the upcoming movie Chhapaak, she captioned:

“A character that will stay with me forever…#Malti

Shoot begins today!#Chhapaak

Releasing-10th January, 2020.@meghnagulzar@foxstarhindi@masseysahib”

The name used in the movie for the protagonist ‘Malti’ is actually Laxmi Agarwal, who in real life is an acid-attack survivor and the plot of the story is based on her.

As the first look of the character, ‘Malti’ was revealed, it sent a powerful message about acid-attacks and its survivors. Apart from the amazing prosthetics used to recreate a burnt face, it’s the intensity in the actor’s eyes that has already won the show. Kudos to Deepika as she successfully emoted the undying human spirit and determination of the survivor in the picture.

The film’s team had earlier shared a picture from the script reading session of the movie.

Giving an essence about the story, Deepika had posted a tweet on December 24, last year, writing, “A story of trauma and triumph. And the unquashable human spirit. Elated to collaborate with Fox Star Studios on #Chhapaak.”

The 33-year-old actor will essay the role of Laxmi, who at the age of 15, was attacked allegedly by a spurned lover in 2005. Agarwal had to undergo several surgeries. Later, she took up the job of helping acid attack survivors and promoted campaigns to stop such attacks. Her attacker, a 32-year old man, was an acquaintance of her family.

Agarwal is a well-known advocate of stricter punishments in acid attack cases, reported ANI.

The film is being helmed by Meghna Gulzar and being co-produced by Deepika and Fox Star Studios.

Deepika was last seen on the big screen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat‘. She admitted in Filmfare’s Jio Famously, over the coffee table interview hosted by Jitesh Pillai that she indeed took a break from work after being on a success role from the movies she had previously done.

‘Chhapaak’ is slated to hit the theatres on January 1 0, 2020.
