Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute at 10:00 AM at Amar Jawan Jyoti along with three chiefs of the armed forces today paid homage to the eternal flame at the memorial built at India Gate to celebrate the courage of all armed forces personnels who lost their lives in battle.

Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat, Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa and Admiral Sunil Lanba received PM Modi at India Gate.

The PM paid his tributes with garlands at Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial followed by the Guard Commander who gave the Salami Shartr or Present Arms and then the Shok Shastr or Reverse Arms.

After everybody paid tribute to the Amar Jawan Jyoti, an eternal flame of fire, PM Modi penned down his message in the monuments register. PM Modi is the fifth PM to have signed the register at Amar Jawan Jyoti.

PM Modi tweeted in both, Hindi and English, “Happy Republic Day to all fellow Indians.”

As the nation is celebrating 70th Republic Day, the main function was organised at Rajpath in New Delhi.

Under the tradition to host a leader of a foreign country, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in the Chief Guest of 70th Republic Day parade. He is the second South African President after Nelson Mandela to be the Chief Guest at the Republic Day celebrations.
