The Congress party on Tuesday visited Gujarat to conduct its high-profile strategic meeting. The Congress Working Committee (CWC) is all set on their campaign trail by conducting all the brainstorming in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home turf to give the Lok Sabha electioneering a head start.

Congress General Secretary and star campaigner, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was recently appointed as General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh (east region), today addressed the CWC for the first time.

The meeting of the Congress’ highest decision-making body comes just two days after the Election Commission declared the Lok Sabha poll dates.

The third Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi joined the meeting latest after Sonia Gandhi, who is the UPA chairperson and Rahul Gandhi, the Congress president.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who joined as Congress General Secretary last month sat with other Congress general secretaries, away from her mother and brother, at her first CWC meeting.

Before the meeting, the three Gandhis and other Congress leaders rode a bus to Sabarmati for a visit to Mahatma Gandhi’s ashram. They also paid tribute to soldiers at a memorial before heading to Sardar Patel National Memorial for the CWC meeting.

Sources say the Congress is looking to send out a strong political message to the nation from the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

“It is after 1961, a gap of 58 years, that Gujarat is hosting a meeting of the CWC. It is also being held to commemorate the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi beginning a new chapter in India’s Independence struggle by launching the ‘Salt Satyagraha‘ to Dandi on March 12, 1930,” Congress’ state in-charge Rajeev Satav told reporters on Monday.

“Walking in the footsteps of the Mahatma, Congress will launch a new Independence movement to save democracy,” Mr Satav added.
