On Saturday, India reported the highest single-day Covid death toll, with over 3,700 people succumbing to the virus, despite smaller states like Uttarakhand reporting 100 or more fatalities for the second day in a row and Bengal recording three-digit deaths for the first time. The number of cases filed on the day fell marginally from Friday’s high of 4 lakh to 3.92 lakh.

Over 86,000 people got their first dose of Phase-3 vaccine

On May 1, a total of 86,023 people between the ages of 18 and 44 got their first dose of COVID vaccine across 11 states, according to the Union Health Ministry. As the third phase of the national vaccination campaign began on Saturday, the total number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country surpassed 15.68 lakh. “86,023 beneficiaries in the age group of 18-44 years got their first dose of COVID vaccine across 11 states,” according to the ministry.

12 journalists test positive for Covid-19

Officials said on Sunday that 12 journalists who had undergone RT-PCR checks to cover the Belgaum Lok Sabha by-poll counting had tested positive for Covid-19. According to the authorities, a total of 29 journalists had undergone the assessments required by the Election Commission.

 According to them, the 12 come from print and broadcast news outlets. Following the medical examination, deputy CM Laxman Savadi directed that the scribes be quarantined and that medical care be arranged for them.

The counting process started a day after the Supreme Court declined to put it on hold, and the State Election Commission (SEC) stated that candidates and their agents would only be able to access the counting centers if they have tested negative for COVID-19 in the 48 hours prior to the start of the counting process or have received all doses of the vaccine.

Despite election officials’ promises that COVID-19 laws will be strictly followed, scenes from counting centers on Sunday morning revealed that social distancing and mask-wearing regulations were being broken in many districts.
