Nirav Modi is wanted for defrauding Punjab National Bank (PNB) worth Rs 13,000 crore. His uncle, Mehul Choksi is wanted, too and both of them have fled from the country.
Nirav Modi’s beachfront bungalow was demolished by authorities using explosives on Friday. As per the reports, it is the same mansion where Nirav Modi used to host lavish parties of high-profile people.
The news agency PTI, quoting a senior district administration officer reported, “Nirav Modi, the fugitive billionaire’s sprawling sea-facing bungalow in Maharashtra’s Alibaug costs over Rs. 100 crore, however, as illegal, it was demolished with a huge quantity of explosives on Friday.”
As per a report by Business Today, Nirav Modi had violated the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) rules by encroaching upon the area to build a bigger bungalow, he had not only carried out illegal construction in the CRZ zone but also created a garden outside his villa and between the beach, which is government land and falls in the CRZ zone.
On February 1, the Maharashtra Government told Bombay High Court that the authorities will require two weeks to bring down the structure.
The first stage of demolition started on January 25, after which the district administration found that demolishing the 30,000-sq ft structure will take longer if done manually using earth movers and would be a costly affair.
It was then decided that explosive bombs will be used to take down the property. Over 100 explosives were used.
