Dr. Mohammed Farooq Azam, an IIT Indore faculty member, has been named National Correspondent for Himalayan Glaciers by the Ministry of Education in India and the World Glacier Monitoring Services (WGMS) in Switzerland. In collaboration with Indian glaciologists and IIT Indore, he was nominated by the Indian Department of Science and Technology.

Azam is an assistant professor at the institute’s Department of Civil Engineering. For the past 12 years, he has focused on Himalayan glaciers and hydrology, publishing many studies on the glaciers’ health, risks, and water evolution in glacierized basins, including two recent papers in Science.

Azam will play a critical role in the advancement of Himalayan glaciology as the country reporter for World Glacier Monitoring Services in Switzerland. His main responsibilities would include coordinating and representing glacier monitoring in India with the WGMS network, serving as the WGMS’s central communication node for India, and collecting and submitting annual data from India to the WGMS for publication in the ‘Global Glacier Change Bulletin’ series.
