A first information report (FIR) has been filed against yoga guru Baba Ramdev for disseminating disinformation during the epidemic, based on a complaint filed by the Indian Medical Association’s Chhattisgarh wing. On Thursday, a FIR was lodged in Raipur.

During the Covid-19 epidemic, Ramkrishna Yadav aka Baba Ramdev allegedly made reckless comments, disrupted public order, and disregarded administrative instructions, according to the FIR.

Inspector RK Mishra, in-charge of the Civil Lines police station in Raipur, filed the FIR. Dr Rakesh Gupta, president of the IMA Chhattisgarh, filed the complaint. It was filed on May 26 and claimed that Baba Ramdev was disseminating misleading information regarding the medicines prescribed by the Indian Council of Medical Research for Covid-19 therapy.

The lawsuit went on to say that such remarks were made at a time when the entire medical profession, as well as the government, was fighting the epidemic.

Ramdev’s Controversial statement on Allopathic meds

Baba Ramdev was seen calling modern medicine a “Stupid Science” in a video that went viral on social media in May. He allegedly went on to claim that drugs licenced by the Drugs Controller General of India, such as remdesivir and fabiflu, have failed to cure Covid patients in India.

Baba Ramdev said that “lakhs of [Covid] patients died after taking allopathic medicines.” He also allegedly raised questions on the vaccination campaign.

Case registered against Baba Ramdev

According to the police, any misleading information related to the pandemic that is circulated is prohibited and categorised as a punishable offence. Ramdev’s statements come under this purview, they said.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Lakhan Patel, a case has been registered against Baba Ramdev under sections 186, 188, 269, 270, 504 and 505(1) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 51, 52 and 54 of the Disaster Management Act.
