Congress chief Rahul Gandhi hinted today that the central government’s current efforts would be insufficient to combat the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging India. He also accused the government of causing deaths by inaction.

“The only way to avoid the spread of Corona now is a complete shutdown – with the safety of NYAY for the vulnerable parts,” Mr. Gandhi tweeted today, adding, “GOI (Government of India) doesn’t get it.”

Mr. Gandhi also said, “The Government of India’s inaction is killing many innocent people.”

In its 2019 general election manifesto, the Wayanad parliamentarian’s party suggested NYAY or Nyuntam Aay Yojana (Minimum Wage Scheme), offering families in the bottom 20% of the economic strata a minimum of Rs72,000 per year as assured income.

He had vowed to “try” the system in Kerala if the party-led coalition was elected to power in the Assembly election last month.

According to the Congress leader, this was the only way to revive the Indian economy, which had “collapsed” as a result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetization, his flawed GST execution, and now the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Gandhi had criticized the Centre last week, claiming that there was no responsibility considering the fact that over two lakh people died in India during the second wave of the epidemic.

Over the last 24 hours, India has recorded over 3.57 lakh new Covid incidents, with 567 deaths. The country’s caseload has now surpassed two crores, with almost 3,500 casualties.

The BJP slammed Mr. Gandhi’s tweet today, accusing him of “cheap politics” in the face of the pandemic.
