A cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Devprayag, about 120 kilometres from Dehradun, has destroyed many shops and homes, according to news agency ANI. According to a senior official, no injuries have yet been identified.

The cloudburst struck about 5 p.m., causing damage to about a dozen shops and other buildings, according to authorities. No injuries have been confirmed since the majority of these businesses were forced to close due to Covid constraints.

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been sent to the scene to assist in relief and rescue efforts.

The cloudburst occurred about 5 p.m. over the Shanta river, inundating areas along its banks with a large volume of slush-containing boulders, according to Mahipal Singh Rawat, SHO of the Devprayag police station.

He added that two civic buildings, including the multi-purpose Nagar Palika Bhawan, collapsed after being struck by the debris thrown down by the cloudburst.

The cloudburst also damaged a number of shops in Devprayag’s Dashrath Danda Parvat district, according to the SHO.

People were aware and had fled to secure places such as the bus stop and police station grounds, but no one was killed, he added.

The extent of the injury, according to Municipal Commissioner KK Kotiyal, has yet to be determined.
