Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of 24th and last Jain Tirthankar Lord Mahavir is being celebrated across the country on Wednesday (17/04/2019).

The day is considered one of the most sacred days for Jains.

The followers of Lord Mahavir celebrate this festival by chanting prayers, offering prasad and participating in chariot processions.

Today, Jain temples are decorated with flags, and alms are offered to the poor.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and PM Narendra Modi greeted people on this occasion via Twitter.

In a message, the President said that Lord Mahavira’s message of peace and non-violence has enriched our cultural heritage. He also said that on this auspicious day, the people should resolve to ceaselessly strive for harmony in our country and across the world.

In his message, the Vice President said, that Bhagwan Mahavir’s messages of non-violence, truth and universal compassion illuminated a path of righteousness and honesty. Mr Naidu said, his teachings are universal and therefore relevant to the entire world. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile said, “Bhagwan Mahavir is a shining beacon of a tradition whose exemplary teachings have furthered the spirit of peace, harmony, brotherhood and non-violence. May his blessings enhance happiness and well-being among our citizens.”
