Kanta Prasad (80), the proprietor of the famed “Baba Ka Dhaba” in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar district, was taken to Safdarjung Hospital following a suicide attempt and is being treated in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

On Thursday, DCP (South) Atul Kumar Thakur claimed that Prasad’s MLC report indicated that he had consumed alcohol and sleeping drugs, which was the cause of his “unconsciousness.”

Karan Prasad, Prasad’s son, also informed police that his father drank and took sleeping pills on Thursday night. According to the family, he had been upset over his business for the last several days.

Prasad is in a “critical” state, according to physicians at Safdarjung Hospital. “We’ve admitted him to the intensive care unit, where physicians are keeping an eye on him. He is unconscious and is on a ventilator,” stated a hospital spokeswoman.

Badami Devi, Prasad’s wife, claimed he had closed their new restaurant in Malviya Nagar, which had opened in December of last year, and had returned to his old roadside stall since the expense of maintaining the new operation was about Rs 1 lakh. Prasad’s monthly salary was about Rs 30,000.

Prasad filed a cheating complaint against YouTuber Gaurav Wasan in November of last year, alleging misuse of cash donated to aid the elderly couple.

On October 7 of last year, Wasan shot the widely circulated video of Prasad and his wife. The video showed the pair, who were teary-eyed, lamenting the fact that they had no clients. Several individuals came to Prasad’s cafe after the video went viral and contributed money.

Prasad told The Indian Express in November that he had only gotten a cheque for Rs 2 lakh from Wasan and that people came in just to shoot photos, and that his sales had not increased as a result of the film.

Wasan visited the dhaba last week, and Prasad apologised for the “misunderstanding” and for filing a complaint against him. Both of them hugged each other.
