Samajwadi Party leader and Rampur Lok Sabha MP Azam Khan have been transferred to the Medanta Hospital’s Covid-19 ICU on Monday, a day after being admitted with coronavirus infection. He is being cared for by a team of doctors, the hospital said.

On April 30, the 72-year-old chief and his son Abdullah Khan were both diagnosed with Covid-19, and they were admitted to a private hospital from the Sitapur jail on May 9.

According to a health bulletin issued here on Monday, Azam Khan’s oxygen needs to be increased to 10 liters per minute during the day, prompting the critical care team at the Medanta Hospital in Lucknow to transfer him to the Covid ICU.

The doctors there are treating him aggressively,” the hospital said.

The 30-year-old Abdullah Khan’s condition, according to the hospital, is safe and satisfactory.

Dr Rakesh Kapoor, director of Medanta Hospital (Lucknow), told PTI on Sunday that Azam Khan had mild symptoms when he was admitted.

“Azam Khan has been holding on four litres of oxygen due to a fever. His examinations are being carried out, and he will be handled appropriately. Mr Kapoor told PTI on Sunday that his son is in good health.

In February of last year, Azam Khan, along with his son and wife Tazeen Fatma, were arrested in connection with a number of events.

Tazeen Fatma was given bail in all 34 cases against her by the Allahabad High Court in December.

The jail administration attempted to persuade Azam Khan to seek treatment at Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University on May 2, but the Samajwadi Party chief declined.

On Sunday, however, he was persuaded and admitted to the Medanta Hospital.

On Sunday, Azam Khan was examined by a team of doctors from the district hospital, including Sitapur CMO Madhu Garola.

Thirteen other inmates had also tested positive for COVID-19 after they complained of fever and cough on April 29, a jail official had said earlier.
