Harish Chaudhary, the Rajasthan revenue minister, will be the next Congress in-charge of poll-bound Punjab, taking over from senior Congress politician and former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat. Harish Chaudhary’s name had been mentioned as a possible replacement for Harish Rawat during the Congress’s troubles in Punjab for some time.

His name was mentioned when Sidhu quit as Punjab Congress chairman due to disputes with Charanjit Singh Channi over appointments. Chaudhary stated at the time that he would take any opportunity the party offered him.

Channi and Sidhu reconciled their disagreements, and Sidhu was re-elected as the party’s president. The problem was resolved after it was decided to create a coordinating committee.

While a change in the party’s affairs in-charge was long overdue, Amarinder Singh’s announcement of a new party with ties to the BJP appears to be a fresh danger to the Punjab Congress. The Congress, on the other hand, claimed that this will not pose a danger to the party, claiming that Amarinder Singh’s outfit will just divide rival votes.

Harish Chaudhary was a significant figure in the events that shook Punjab in recent months, including Amarinder Singh’s resignation. Sonia Gandhi, the Congress president, nominated Chaudhary as an observer of the party’s operations.
