Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has greeted the people of Madhya Pradesh for getting a status of Ramsar Site for Sakhya Sagar Lake in Shivpuri district.

He said it is the second Ramsar site in Madhya Pradesh, the first site is Bhojtal.

Chouhan said this status was received under guidance of Prime Minister @narendramodi Ji for biodiversity and environment conservation.

He said Sakhya Sagar of Shivpuri will get a place in the global tourism map after getting the status of Ramsar site and it will promote the efforts of the government and nature loving citizens in the state for biodiversity and environmental conservation.

The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands, recognizing the fundamental ecological functions of wetlands and their economic, cultural, scientific, and recreational value, as per the website of Environmental Information System Centre (ENVIS) on Wildlife & Protected Areas of Wildlife Institute of India (WII). 

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Labour and Employment Bhupender Yadav tweeted the emphasis PM @narendramodi Ji has put on environmental protection and conservation has led to a marked improvement in how India treats its wetlands. Delighted to inform that 5 more Indian wetlands have got Ramsar recognition as wetlands of international importance.

The Karikili Bird Sanctuary, Pallikaranai Marsh Reserve Forest, Pichavaram Mangrove in Tamil Nadu, Sankhya Sagar in Madhya Pradesh and Pala Wetland in Mizoram have made it to the coveted list, the union minister tweeted.
