Seven persons killed and nine injured in a fire that broke out in a multi-storey residential building in the Vijay Nagar locality of Indore on early morning on Saturday.

According to the police, the main entrance of the building of the the ground floor and stairs got engulfed in the flames and black smoke due to the fire.

The residents could not get out of the building as many of them jumped from the balcony to save their lives, the police said.

A short circuit in the electric circuit might have caused the fire, which spread in the parking area of the residential building, the police said.

Most of the victims died of suffocation, the police said.

The police has registered an FIR against the owner of the building under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) as the flats in the building were given on rent.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has condoled the deaths and prayed for speedy recovery of the injured. He has announced the ex-gratia compensation of Rs. 4 lakh each to be given to the family members of the deceased in the fire incident.

Prime Minister Modi has condoled the deaths due to a fire incident in MP. He also prayed for the early recovery of injured.

The police arrested a man identified as Sanjay Dixit alias Shubham (27) accused of setting on fire a two wheeler from where the fire spread in other parts of the parking lot where other vehicles were parked. The arrest was done basis of CCTV footage and other inputs the police got.

A case of murder and mischief by fire intending to cause destruction of any building is registered against the accused, the police said.

The accused was irked over a woman with whom he was having intimacy was residing in the building denied to marry him, the police said.
