The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report – ‘Crime in India 2021’ shows 98.3% of rape cases registered in 2021 in Madhya Pradesh was committed by someone known to the victim.

The report highlighted the vulnerability of girls and women within their homes, neighbourhoods and workplaces.

As per the report in 2898 out of 2947 rape cases registered in 2021 the offender was known to victim.

In 292 rape cases offenders were family members, in 1145 cases offenders were friends/online friends or live in partners on pretext of marriage/ separated husband, 1461 cases offenders were family friends/neighbors /employer or other known persons were offenders and in 49 cases offenders were unknown or not identified.

In women centric cyber crimes in Madhya Pradesh, 63 cases of women centric crimes were registered including 15 cases related to publishing or transmitting of sexuality explicit materials of girls and 12 cases related to other women centric cyber crimes like blackmailing/defamation/morphing/creating fake profile.

The report mentions 6027 cases in which girl child was victim including 3522 cases of child rape, 2386 cases of sexual assault, 82 cases of sexual harassment and 21 cases of use of girl child for pornography/storing child pornography material and 1 case of unnatural offences (POCSO/IPC 377) and 15 cases of other offences of POCSO were registered in Madhya Pradesh.

In MP, 19173 cases were registered related to crime against children in year 2021 including murder – 127 cases, murder with rape /pocso – 8 cases, other murder 119 cases, abetment of suicide of child 95 cases, attempt to commit murder 53 cases, infanticide- 6 cases, foeticide – 23 cases, exposure and abandonment – 159 cases, simple hurt – 1576 cases, grievous hurt – 113 cases, kidnapping and abduction of children – total 8224 cases, kidnapping and abduction for purpose of begging – 2 cases, kidnapping and abduction of minor girls to compel her marriage – 1263 cases, kidnapping and abduction in order to murder – 1 cases, procuration of minor girls – 67 cases, other kidnapping and abduction – 19 cases, selling of minors for prostitution girls – 6 cases and human trafficking children – 52 cases.    

In India a total of 4,28,278 cases of crime against women were registered during 2021, showing an increase of 15.3% over 2020 wherein 3,71,503 cases were registered.

In majority of cases across the country under crime against women under IPC were registered under ‘Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives’ (31.8%) followed by ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ (20.8%), ‘Kidnapping & Abduction of Women’ (17.6%) and ‘Rape’ (7.4%). The crime rate registered per lakh women population is 64.5 in 2021 in comparison with 56.5 in 2020.
