The residents of Kargil staged a protest demonstration in distress after the government announced Ladakh a separate division from Jammu and Kashmir.

The Kargil occupants are against the decision and have sought the decision to be reviewed immediately.

Last Friday, the locals demanded a six-month rotation of the offices between Kargil and Leh. The Governor Satya Pal Malik’s administration triggered controversy by separating Ladakh from the Kashmir division and granted it the status of the state’s third division, after Kashmir and Jammu.

Two days after the decision, the Kargil inhabitants in thousands marched towards the district commissioner’s office in Kargil town and handed over a memorandum seeking divisional offices in both Leh and Kargil.

The protestors during the demonstration threatened to start a civil disobedience movement if their demands are not fulfilled.

Media reports claimed that all political, social and religious organisations in the region have called for a shutdown on Monday, and threatened to launch an agitation if the decision is not reviewed.

Similarly, the students from Kargil in Jammu division from various institutions protested on Monday and sought the attention of authorities towards the issue.
