The ADJ, Purulia (West Bengal) has sentenced Ashok Kumar Roy, then Officer-in-charge, Police Station, Barabazar, Purulia (West Bengal) to undergo five years Rigorous Imprisonment in a suicide case.

The CBI had registered a case in compliance of the orders dated 06.07.1998 of Calcutta High Court and had taken over the FIR No. 5/98 dated 27.02.1998, earlier registered at Police Station Barabazar, Purulia.

It was alleged that Budhan Sabar committed suicide on 16.02.1998 in the Cell Block of Purulia District Jail as a result of brutal torture meted out to him by Ashok Kumar Roy, the then In-charge, Police Station Barabazar, Purulia during his Police Custody.

After thorough investigation, CBI filed a chargesheet against the accused on 19.02.2001. Charges were framed against him on 22.09.2003. During the course of trial, prosecution examined 46 Prosecution Witnesses and 75 Exhibits were taken on record by the Court.

The Trial Court found the said accused guilty and convicted him.

This morning the bus going from Sagar to Jaisinagar met with an accident near village Sarkhadi in which 27 passengers were injured and have been admitted to Sagar District Hospital Tili for treatment. Revenue and Transport Minister Govind Singh Rajput reached the district hospital to see the injured as soon as the information was received, where after taking information from the doctors regarding the health of the injured, he directed the RTO to investigate the incident and cancel the permit of the bus and blame the culprits. Strict action should be taken Rajput said that such incidents are sad, due to which the department periodically checks the vehicles and strict action will be taken against the guilty in this incident.
