Congress government in Chhattisgarh is seeking land to open cow shelters in every village. The trendy cow politics has begun keeping the party’s poll promises to the state. Cows will most certainly be the beneficiaries following the poverty-stricken farmers.

Cow politics is favorite of politicians and this time, the Congress government decided to jump on the trendy bandwagon keeping in mind the poll promise to work on four fronts – ‘Chhattisgarh ke chaar chinhaari – Narwa Garwa Ghurwa Baari’ that means there are four symbols of Chhattisgarh – rivulets, cow or livestock, domestic dump and farming.

The state government has asked gram sabhas to provide excess land under its control to build cow shelters or gothan. The government would take this land and build a shelter and a common feeding ground where the cows would be able to graze throughout the day.

“Chhattisgarh has long been battling with the problem of stray cattle.”

“People leave their cattle to graze anywhere and they park themselves on the roads. This is also because the milk productivity is very low as Chhattisgarh government has never worked to improve the breed. We have drawn up an elaborate plan and would be Implementing it within the next six months.”

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel told ET

Some areas have scarcity of land for the stray shetlter which is why the is thinking to cluster 4-5 villages together to have a common cow shelter rather than many in each village. However, political pundits in the state have politicised the issue claiming that attempts can be made to reclaim the cow shelter program, Baghel denies.

“This was a poll promise. Congress won on the slogan ‘Chhattisgarh ke chaar chinhaari Nama Garwa Ghupua Baan’ _ It means there are four symbols of Chhattisgarh rivulets cow or livestock, domestic dump and farming.”

“We had promised to work on these four fronts and we are doing just that.”

Bhupesh Baghel, CM of Chhattisgarh

The government is set to link the policy of this plan to employing youth of the state.
