The Democratic Lawyer’s Forum Jabalpur (MP) has filed a contempt petition (criminal) against an open letter sent by 15 retired judges, 77 retired bureaucrats and 25 retired armed forces officers to the Supreme Court chief justice for allegedly criticized the observations made by the division bench during hearing of Nupur Sharma’s case and making it public.

The open letter of July 4, 2022 by to by 15 retired judges, 77 retired bureaucrats and 25 retired Armed forces officers to the Supreme Court chief justice allegedly criticized the observations made by the division bench during hearing of Nupur Sharma’s case, the Forum’s counsel Ravindra Gupta said.

The letter public was made public and was reported in the print and electronic media.

The petitioner has sought direction from the court to set up a committee of senior judges of Supreme Court under the supervision of the CJI to inquire how and who facilitated the signatures, whether they passed a resolution unanimously in the meeting, where the meetings was held, who was the convener of this group, who funded this meeting and other related issues, Gupta said.

The petition further seek direction to produce them before the court and to be punished for minimum one day standing in the court premises, Gupta said.
