The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast “heavy to very heavy” rainfall in several parts of eastern and central India as the monsoon arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday, submerging the metropolis and grinding it to a halt.

“On June 9, the southwest monsoon advanced into entire central India, including Mumbai, the Konkan region, south Gujarat, parts of Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh,” according to the IMD, which also warned that the southwest monsoon would intensify in the coming six to seven days, resulting in heavy rainfall in the east and central India.

According to IMD, the following states will be impacted in the coming days:

Maharashtra was pounded by heavy rains on Wednesday, and the weather service has predicted “extremely heavy” rainfall through June 15. From June 12 to 15, showers in the state’s Konkan region could be “isolated and extremely heavy.” The IMD has issued a’red alert’ for Mumbai and the surrounding districts of Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas.

Kerala and Karnataka, along with Maharashtra, are expected to experience “extremely heavy” rains, according to IMD. Kerala will be affected from June 11 to 15, while Karnataka will be affected from June 12 to 15.

Odisha: More than 20cm of rain, described as “extremely heavy,” is expected to fall on June 11 and 12.

Chhattisgarh and Telangana: Rainfall activity is expected in Chhattisgarh and Telangana from June 11 to 13, and June 12 to 13, respectively, according to the department.

In addition, the IMD has forecast “fairly widespread” thunderstorm activity in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Bihar in the next two-three days, ahead of the monsoon onset.
