Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal chief minister, said she was targeted by unidentified men hours after filing her candidacy in Nandigram to run against her protégé-turned-rival Suvendu Adhikari in the upcoming elections.

In a photo tweeted by her nephew Abhishek Banerjee this morning, Mamata Banerjee was seen in hospital with her left leg in a cast, a day after she reported an assault in Nandigram, where she filed her nomination for the state election later this month.

A Trinamool Congress MP, Abhishek Banerjee, posted the picture with a post criticizing the BJP, which has waged a ferocious campaign to depose the two-time Chief Minister and her Trinamool Congress from power in Bengal.

According to a senior doctor at the state-run hospital, the Trinamool Congress chief had wounds on her right shoulder, forearm, and neck after being pushed by four to five people. The doctor said, “We will keep her under care for the next 48 hours.” “More testing will be needed, and we will determine our next course of action after assessing her condition.”

The BJP, which had blamed the Trinamool after its chief JP Nadda’s convoy came under attack in Bengal in December, called the incident a stunt by Bengal’s ruling party. “Not one eye witness seems to corroborate Mamata Banerjee’s ‘attack’ version. People of Nandigram are upset and angry at her for blaming them and bringing disrepute,” Bengal BJP tweeted.

Supporters and members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) blocked trains near Kadambagachi station on the Sealdah–Hasnabad line in south Bengal on Thursday morning to protest an alleged assault on chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday.

“They are trying to diminish the police’s authority and establish their own power. The EC is also not being able to take the right decision. We have decided move the EC on Thursday to protest against this and also inform the poll panel about this,” said Partha Chatterjee, state minister and TMC leader.

Banerjee’s claims were both refuted by the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). They said that Banerjee had previously made similar allegations and that the incident should be investigated.
