Unicorn companies with an assessment of more than $1 billion are called private startups. The term was first popularised by risk capitalist Aileen Lee in 2013 to describe rare, more than $1 billion worth of technology startups.

While new technology-based firms have established new business classes, the pandemic in Covid-19 has ensured that many more business segments are run online with start-ups in this area proliferating into new territories.

Here is a survey of CB Insights data on the unicorn ecosystem in India and worldwide.

1. Paytm is India’s highest value Unicorn, 7 more were added to the unicorn list in 2021

In India, One97 Communications (owner of Paytm), Byju’s ed-tech and OYO rooms for travel are the leading three unicorn companies. Its estimates are 16 billion dollars, 13 billion dollars and 9 billion dollars. In the first four months of 2021, seven Indian companies entered the list. They include CRED, Meesho, ShareChat, Five Star Business Finance, Digit Insurance and Infra.market and Groww.

2. The United States has more unicorns than India and China put together

The fact that unicorns can attract large sums of funding from risk-capitalists makes them unique. In one way, this should reflect rather than current performance the price of business and technology.

Networking with potential investors is a key factor here, as is to be expected. Data from CB Insights show that the United States (US) is the best place for investment unicorns worldwide, followed by India and China. With a combined value of approximately $1,1 trillion, the United States is the home of 52 percent of the world’s total unicorns.

China has combined 138 unicorns worth more than $500 billion. India is ranked third on the global list of unicorns, with 31 unicorns. The value of Indian unicorns is $106 billion combined.

3.In just four months, 2021 has already seen the most new unicorns ever recorded

The information on unicorns since 2010 is provided by the CB Insight data. The number of unicorns in 2010 has increased to 654 by April 2021. The most unicorns were produced during this period in 2021 (just till April 22). 88 companies in the US were given Unicorn status between January and April 2021, making it the best year in U.S. Unicorn history. In 2018, unicorn growth in China peaked when the list of unicorns added 42 companies. This year in China, only two firms have added to the unicorn list..

4. Which business category do most unicorns enter?

The most popular segments for these private enterprises are Fintech and Internet software services. In each of these two categories, there are more than 100 unickorns in the world and there is an e-commerce and direct-to-consumer sector with a share of 12 percent.

Fintech companies like Paytm have redefined the Indian payment industry. The artificial intelligence, public health, mobile and telecommunications also come in these categories.
