The Trinamool Congress nominated former Prasar Bharati Chief Executive Officer Jawhar Sircar to the Rajya Sabha on Saturday. The governing party in West Bengal announced Sircar’s nomination in the Upper House of Parliament via a tweet from its official Twitter account.

After former legislator Dinesh Trivedi defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections earlier this year, the Trinamool’s Rajya Sabha seat was left empty. Although there were many rumours about the TMC’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha, the TMC put them to rest on Saturday when it nominated Jawhar Sircar for the position.

Jawhar Sircar worked for the government for more than four decades in various positions. Sircar rose to prominence after entering the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1975, handling challenges such as communal disturbances in West Bengal’s Bardhaman and 24 Parganas districts.

Jawhar Sircar was appointed Secretary of the Union Ministry of Culture, a position he held until 2012. Following his time in the cultural ministry, Sircar became the CEO of Prasar Bharati, India’s public broadcaster, where he remained until 2016.
