According to an official release, UNGA President-elect Abdulla Shahid met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, who stressed the necessity of revamping the multilateral system to reflect the present realities and aspirations of the great majority of the world’s people.

Following his election as president-elect of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on July 7, Mr Shahid, who is also the Maldives’ Foreign Minister, is visiting India in his position as president-elect of the UNGA.

PM Modi congratulated Mr Shahid on his landslide victory in the election, saying that the result reflected the Maldives’ rising international prominence.

According to the release, “The Prime Minister congratulated the President-elect on his “Presidency of Hope” Vision Statement and promised him of India’s complete support and collaboration during his presidency. He stressed the necessity of revamping the multilateral system, including UN agencies, to reflect present global realities and the aspirations of the great majority of the world’s people.”

Both presidents also spoke on the recent rapid progress of the India-Maldives bilateral relationship.

Despite the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 epidemic, PM Modi expressed pleasure that bilateral initiatives are proceeding smoothly. He emphasized the Maldives’ importance as a vital component of India’s “Neighbourhood First policy” and the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision, according to the statement.
