After Trivendra Singh Rawat was made to resign on Tuesday, Tirath Singh Rawat will take over as the next Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, with just a year until the state election. Tirath Singh Rawat, 56, is a BJP Member of Parliament. He was the party’s president in Uttarakhand from 2013 to 2015, as well as a former MLA from the district. Today at 4 p.m., he will be sworn in.

Tirath Singh Rawat, the newly created state of Uttarakhand’s first education minister. He was then elected as Uttarakhand’s state general secretary in 2007, followed by state chief electoral officer and state membership chief. He was elected to the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 2012 and became the Uttarakhand BJP Chief in 2013.

Over notable contenders such as Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Uttarakhand Minister Dhan Singh Rawat, the name of Tirath Singh Rawat has been chosen.

After days of rumours about a leadership shift in the party, Trivendra Singh Rawat resigned amid charges of non-performance and anger within the Uttarakhand BJP over his management style. He was questioned by reporters yesterday over whether he believed he was dismissed. “Go to Delhi to find out why,” Mr Rawat said, adding to a long list of Uttarakhand Chief Ministers who have failed to complete their terms.

According to BJP sources, while the party had been aware of increasing discontent with Rawat’s leadership for some time, the decision to fire him was finalised following a visit to the state by BJP vice president Raman Singh and Rajya Sabha MP Dushyant Gautam on March 7, during which they met with MLAs, RSS leaders, and the Chief Minister.

With just over a year to turn it around for his party BJP, Tirath Singh Rawat has the challenge of heading the BJP into polls due in February. He, like his predecessor, is a low-key figure who isn’t known for being a mass leader. He is thought to be more of an organized person, having been a former member of the BJP’s ideological mentor RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh).
