Prime Minister Narendra Modi today stated that August 14 will be commemorated as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, a day before India’s 75th Independence Day, to emphasise that the anguish of Partition will never be forgotten.

The 14th of August is Pakistan’s Independence Day.

“The wounds of partition will never be forgotten. Due to mindless hatred and violence, millions of our sisters and brothers have been displaced, and many have died. The 14th of August shall be celebrated as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, in honour of our people’s hardships and sacrifices “PM Modi sent out a tweet.

The Prime Minister said the day will serve as a reminder to keep societal divides at bay and to build the spirit of unity.

In his second tweet, the PM wrote, “May the #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay continue to remind us of the need to remove the poison of societal divisions and disharmony and further build the spirit of oneness, social harmony, and human empowerment.”

Following the British colonial separation of India in 1947, Pakistan was formed as a Muslim country, and millions of people were displaced, with many lakhs of people losing their lives as large-scale rioting erupted. Large-scale rioting erupted in West Bengal’s Noakhali and Bihar

Mahatma Gandhi chose to stay in Noakhali and explore the district in order to reestablish communal harmony and peace.

In the history of the two countries, partition is a terrible and unpleasant memory..
