Mukul Roy along with son Shubhranshu returned to Mamata Banerjee’s-led Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, ending weeks of speculation.

Former BJP national vice president Mukul Roy and his son Subhranshu Roy have rejoined the Trinamool Congress, according to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The statement was made in a news conference held at the headquarters of the Trinamool Congress in Kolkata.

“I feel happy that I am back to where I belong. Bengal will be back to its former glory, amd I accept Mamata Banerjee as my supreme leader,” Roy said.

“I will give you a detailed response for the reasons why I have returned, but I will say this that I will never return to BJP and I will never be with them,” he added.

“Ghorer chhele ghore phirlo (Mukul has returned home),” said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He was never a traitor like the others, she stressed.

Mamata Banerjee said: “I think Mukul is himself relieved to be back. He was disturbed in the BJP, and tormented in that party.”

Roy added that “given the condition of BJP in Bengal”, no one would stay in the saffron party for long.

Minister Subrata Mukherjee and other top party figures were also present at the Trinamool Bhavan, which is located off the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.

Roy, the former TMC second-in-command who joined the BJP in November 2017, has been separating himself from the saffron party over the last few days.

As heightened security measures were noted at the Trinamool Congress Bhavan outside the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass here, Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had also left her Kalighat house.
