The illness mucormycosis, sometimes known as black fungus, has recently been found in youngsters. Two toddlers from Karnataka have been found sick with mucormycosis, which is the first incidence of its kind in the country.

A 11-year-old girl from Ballari district and a 14-year-old boy from Chitradurga district, both offspring of field labourers, have been afflicted with the fungal illness and are expected to lose one eye due to the infection.

“Two children are undergoing treatment for black fungus infection at Government Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospitals. They are suffering from Acute Juvenile Diabetes (AJD),” a senior health official told PTI.

They have COVID-19 but were unaware of it, according to a health official, who added that they were taken to the hospital after experiencing problems.

In the state, some 1,250 instances of black fungus have been detected. According to the state health department, 1,193 people are now receiving treatment, 18 of whom have been cured, and 39 have died as a result of the sickness.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar informed reporters that the state has received around 10,000 vials of amphotericin-B, a fungus-fighting medicine.

Black fungus has surfaced as a post-COVID-19 problem, particularly in diabetics with high blood sugar levels.
